Police have deleted a ‘light hearted’ tweet that was posted on one of their accounts which urged drivers to use their indicators on roundabouts - and made special reference to BMW and Audi drivers.
Kent Police Ashford, which regularly offers driving tips on Twitter, advised followers about using their side indicators correctly.
The tweet, posted on Sunday, said: “Driving Tip - assist fellow motorists by giving an indication of your intended route. Very useful at roundabouts - includes Audi and BMW :).”
While many saw the funny side of the comment on social media, relating to jokes about Audi and BMW drivers which have been circulating for a long time, others felt the comment was a generalisation against owners of the German cars.
Some also defended their driving in these makes and others.
A Kent Police spokesman said: “Tens of thousands of tweets have been sent out from Kent Police Twitter accounts and it is unfortunate that this one, which was well-intended road safety advice issued in a light-hearted way, may have been deemed inappropriate by some.
“Training is provided to all officers granted access to Kent Police’s Twitter accounts, who receive guidance on how to maintain high standards and also what is and is not acceptable.
“The tweet in question has now been deleted.”
