Police have have arrested a teenage driver who led officers on a high-speed chase which ended in a crash on a busy road.

The 18-year-old driving a silver MG ZR failed to stop when asked to do so by officers in Bybrook Road at 5.45pm yesterday (Saturday, August 13).

After a short pursuit, he crashed into a BMW at the junction of Nettlefield and Faversham Road in Kennington.

Eyewitness Paul Baxter said he was walking with his partner and their dog to the nearby Co-Op store when they saw the MG zooming out of Nettlefield pursued by police.

Mr Baxter helped an elderly couple get out of the car, with a woman “in distress and in need of medical attention”.

Fire crews were called and had to use hydraulic cutting equipment to free her from the vehicle, and used cutting equipment to release two men in the MG.

Meanwhile police say the 18-year-old man needed hospital treatment for an injury to his arm. He was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, and has been bailed until Monday, August 22.

Officers investigating the crash want to track down anyone who might have seen the cars on the road prior to the crash.
