Part of Ashford town centre was taped off after a pedestrian was hit by a car outside a homeware store, resulting in renewed calls for traffic controls.

Police cordoned off part of New Rents just before midday following the incident involving a grey Toyota.

The car, which had a damaged front bumper and bonnet, was in the middle of the street outside the HomePlus shop and Ashford Sewing Centre.

The air ambulance landed next to the Lidl supermarket and left at about 1.15pm.

At least three police cars and two ambulances were seen in New Rents.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 11.52am on Saturday to Drum Lane, Ashford, following reports of a collision involving a pedestrian and a car.

"Officers attended the scene, along with the ambulance service. Both the female pedestrian and the male driver of the vehicle were taken to a local hospital for treatment."

The accident happened in an area of town that gives priority to pedestrians.

It prompted a number of calls for the controls on traffic to be tightened.

Traders were among those to demand action to improve safety, with suggestions including controlled bollards.
