POLICE chiefs have promised to continue to investigate any further allegations against Antoni Imiela, the Kent man convicted of multiple rapes.

After Imiela's trial at Maidstone Crown Court, assistant chief constable David Kelly said justice had been done.

He stressed: "Imiela was a very dangerous, callous and sadistic man, and I have no doubt that if we hadn't arrested him when we did, he would have gone on to commit further offences.

"Whether or not there are other offences in his past, we will now look at that."

Kent police's senior investigating officer Supt Colin Murray welcomed the verdicts, saying: "I'm delighted for the families. They are the ones who count in all of this and they are so relieved it's all over."

Mr Kelly said those involved in the investigation, Operation Orb, could not underestimate the importance of DNA, which had played a crucial part in Imiela's capture.

More than 3,500 men had had DNA samples taken as part of the inquiry. The investigation is estimated to cost more than £2.1million, excluding the trial.
