Rats feeding on mess left by lorry drivers

Lorries are parking on newly painted double yellow lines at Orbital Park.

After years of lorries using the business park for overnight parking, business managers and residents of nearby South Willesborough thought the days of human waste, litter left by truckers and rats which it attracted were numbered when, earlier this month, lines were painted.

Lorry numbers have reduced but some are flouting the law.

So, while the problem of lorry parking is reducing in Orbital Park it is increasing elsewhere.

Workers based at Brookfield Industrial Estate, off Chart Road, say an increasing number of lorries are parking on Leacon Road. One Ashford resident who often goes to the estate has captured a video of rats feeding of litter left by lorry drivers and posted it on video sharing website YouTube.

Mark Sparshatt, boss of Sparshatts, a commercial vehicle company which has a base on Brookfield Industrial Estate confirmed that lorry drivers often park there overnight and being in the haulage business, he is aware of the cause of the problem but knows the solution is not easy to introduce.

Mr Sparshatt said: “We don’t provide sufficient facilities in the UK for lorry drivers.”
