ONE of Kent's best known and respected journalists, Barbara Butcher, has died suddenly at the age of 87.
Although she officially retired almost three decades ago, Miss Butcher was still working almost full time, reporting for the Ashford-based Kentish Express.
At one time Miss Butcher, who died on Tuesday, was news editor of the newspaper.
Its Ashford edition chief reporter Mike Bennett said: "She was a quite remarkable character. With notebook in one hand and cigarette in the other she was always a formidable sight when chasing hard news stories. But she was also a reporter of great sensitivity."
Her remarkable achievements were recognised last year in the Queen's Birthday Honours when she was awarded an MBE for her outstanding service to the community. She lived at Wye.
