Newtown Road, in Newtown, Ashford, closed after lorry hits bridge and knocks sign loose

A road was closed to traffic this morning after a lorry hit a bridge and made it unsafe to drive under.

A sign was knocked loose when the railway bridge over Newtown Road, in Newtown, Ashford, was struck by a HGV at around 8.30am.

The sign, which ironically detailed the height restrictions, swung down towards the traffic and the road was closed by police.

All traffic, including Stagecoach's G Line bus, was diverted while Network Rail and KCC Highways fixed the sign.

The road was re-opened at around 10am.

A spokesman for Stagecoach said earlier today: "The Stagecoach G Line services are currently unable to use Newtown bridge due to the height restriction sign on the bridge falling out of place and swinging down towards traffic.

"Due to this potential hazard buses are currently on a diversion."

This is not the first time the bridge has been hit.

Last October, the front cab of a HGV became wedged under the bridge and the top was ripped off.
