Road closed after gas leak

Rush hour delays are expected this afternoon as parts of the A28 remains closed due to a gas leak.

Kent Police closed Chart Road at the junctions with Brookfield Road and with Bridge End and Templar Way following the leak early this morning.

Kent Police were called shortly before 3am after the leak was discovered.

Residents weren't evacuated as a result of the leak - near the council recycling centre - but roads have been closed while the leak is repaired.

Police have visited residents within the immediate area to keep them updated, and Southern Gas workmen are repairing the leak.

A spokesman said work would continue into this evening. The priority, he said, was to fix the leak before discovering the cause of the problem. No customers have been affected.

The A28 Chart Road is the main route into Ashford from Tenterden and the road is heavily used by traffic trying to get onto the M20 and residents heading for the town centre.
