Snow and ice on Charing Hill caused a tanker to jack-knife, resulting in huge tailbacks for commuters this morning.
The tanker was unable to brake on the hill due to the icy road surface shortly before 9am.
Cars attempting to go around the tanker also became stuck. A second HGV was then unable to negotiate the hill, blocking the road in both directions.
Patrols closed roads at Challock roundabout and on the A20 at the junction with the A252.
The Highways department deployed a gritter and a snowplough to the hill, which was re-opened at midday.
