A diversion was put in place and drivers warned to expect delays.

Bus company Stagecoach tweeted to say: "Due to a police incident at the bridge on the A28, our B line is unable to operate past Simone Weil Avenue and the cemetery, services will divert round and re-join route outside police cordon."

A police spokesman said officers were called at 5.50am following concerns for the welfare of a person in Canterbury Road, Ashford.

He added: "Officers attended the scene and the person is now in the care health professionals."

Police and highways officers were at the scene of the incident. The motorway reopened shortly after 7am.
