Hundreds of mourners gathered to celebrate the life of a well-known man who died suddenly, aged just 43.

Olabanji Ismail Olalokuaok Ojikutu, known as Banji, had lived in Ashford most of his adult life after growing up in London.

A funeral service at Charing Crematorium on Friday featured hymns as well as readings and a eulogy by the Rev John Esgate.

Flowers spelt out Banji and other bouquets featured bright colours.

After the service, more than 200 friends and family members went to either the Singleton Barn in Singleton or the Alfred Arms in Newtown, both in Ashford, to share their memories of Banji.

Photos of Banji decorated the Barn and cupcakes with the letter B iced on top were the highlight of the buffet.

Long-term friend Kirstyn Read said: “Banji would have been blown away by how many people were there and how loved he was.

“The vicar said a little bit about him, that if he came round your house he’d be there for ages, and that he liked his food. It was making people laugh. It was such a nice service.”

Friends have set up a Facebook group where people can share memories and photos.

A book of tributes is being created by Banji’s friends for his mum and brother and various pubs and businesses, including the Barn and the Alfred, have collection tins where people can contribute to the funeral costs and raise cash for a proposed memorial bench.
