Hythe boss Scott Porter said their start to life in the Ryman League has taught his side a lesson which he hopes will stand them in good stead all season long.
The Kent League champions endured a baptism of fire with a 3-0 drubbing at Godalming in Ryman League, Division 1 South on Saturday in a performance which frustrated Porter, who claimed it was out of character.
They responded with a 3-0 win over Faversham at Reachfields on Tuesday night and Porter says his players are on a steep learning curve.
He said: "On Saturday we just didn’t do what we do. We didn’t play the way that we have played for the past two years and what has got us here. We didn’t compete properly, didn’t get at them and stop them playing.
"I can’t put my finger on what happened. There wasn’t the effort or work-rate we usually have and it was frustrating. It was a wake-up call and we needed it."
Town face Bognor at home on Saturday before a Bank Holiday Monday trip to Ramsgate.
Porter (pictured) said: "The next two games are tough. Bognor are among the favourites and Ramsgate are big and strong and have played at this level for a long time. We have had the wake-up call and responded and we needed that. We lost the first game last season and went on and had a good season, hopefully we can do the same again."
John Walker is set to miss the two games with an ankle injury, though Porter has an otherwise fit squad to choose from.
