Legendary goalkeeper Peter Shilton was in town on Friday to talk about his life and answer questions from soccer fans.
England’s most capped ever player was at Ashford United’s Homelands Stadium to take part in a joint fund-raiser for both Ashford United and Find A Voice, the Ashford-based charity for people with communication difficulties.
Alastair Dutch, the charity’s chairman, said: “It was a huge success and we had about 125 people there which is very good in this economic climate and rather than the expected 20 minutes he talked for about an hour.
"He just had so much to say about his life and about football which, really, is second to none.
“There were lots of questions for him at the end and we think we’ve raised approximately £1,200 which will be split between the football club and Find a Voice.”
Mr Shilton played in the final stages of four World Cups and conceded the infamous “Hand of God” goal scored by Argentina's Diego Maradona at the World Cup in Mexico in 1986.
