A man has been charged after shop staff were racially abused and attacked with a basket.

Luke Pope, of Sheerness, was charged with robbery in relation to an incident which saw a man dragged in to an alleyway near Ashford High Street at about 1am on Saturday.

His wallet and belongings were stolen in the incident, and it was when the man's card was reportedly used in a shop that things escalated.

At 6.45am that morning, police were called to a disturbance at the High Street shop where a man had racially abused staff and thrown a shopping basket at them.

Pope, of Berridge Road, Sheerness, has since been charged with robbery, assault, two counts of fraud and using racially aggravated threatening words or behaviour.

The 31-year-old appeared at Medway Magistrates' Court on Monday and was remanded in custody until his next appearance at Canterbury Crown Court on Monday, April 6.
