Nick Boylan with his medals from the Global Games
Swimmer Nick Boylan earned himself a place in an exclusive club when he helped set a new world record at the INAS-FID Global Games at Liberec in the Czech Republic.
The Ashford swimmer was part of the Great Britain disability squad which won the 4x100m medley relay in a new world record time of 4min 26.02sec, touching out the team from South Korea by just 0.30 seconds.
Boylan, 24, swam the opening leg, the backstroke, as the GB squad, completed by Dan Pepper (breaststroke), Craig Rodgie (butterfly) and Ben Procter (freestyle), broke the old world record, set in 2002, by two and a half seconds.
Boylan was expected to challenge for an individual medal in the 200m backstroke, but decided to conserve his energy and save himself for the relay, which was only 10 minutes later, to give the team the best possible chance of achieving this magnificent feat.
His mother Pat said her son – a member of the City of Canterbury Swimming Club – was delighted to have played his part in a world record swim. The games attracted 750 athletes from 33 countries, who also comopeted at athletics, table tennis, futsal, basketball, cycling and tennis.
Mrs Boylan said: "Nick absolutely loved being part of the Games. It was very tiring but he thoroughly enjoyed it. They were all absolutely determined to get the record, and we would like to thank all the sponsors that gave so generously so he could compete."
Boylan also claimed a bronze as part of the 4x50m medley squad and in his individual events, was fourth in the 1,500m freestyle, sixth in the breaststroke, over 100m and 200m, seventh in the 200m backstroke and 10th in the 100m backstroke.
