Fire crews use new 'frog spike' to put out fire in undergrowth in Torrington Road, South Ashford

A discarded cigarette is thought to be the cause of a fire which set undergrowth alight in Ashford.

Firefighters were called at around 8.30pm to Torrington Road in South Ashford.

They used a new piece of equipment, called a frog spike, to tackle the fire.

A spokesman for Ashford fire station said: "It's a lance basically used into deep seated fires. It's used for roof fires but we're finding new uses.

"In the past we would rake out but the frog spike lets us get in there."

Crews earlier were called to a grass fire in Woodchurch near Tenterden which destroyed 15 acres of cut grass.
