IT MAY seem unlikely but the usually sober-suited Kent MP Damian Green has betrayed a passion for the epic guitar riffs of the legendary rock band Led Zeppelin.
The Conservative MP has singled out the album "Led Zeppelin 11," recorded in 1969, as the record he considers the best to have been released in the last 50 years.
Although the band achieved notoriety for debauched behaviour - including self-confessed drug taking - it seems their dissolute lifestyle and quintessential heavy metal sound strikes a chord with many parliamentarians.
Mr Green was one of several MPs to identify the album as their favourite in a survey of the best albums ever carried out by the tish Library.
He said the album was "the ultimate album for teenage boys - [heavy] metal as art. No-one has ever topped it. The opening riff of ‘Whole Lotta Love’ is the greatest rock song ever."
Mr Green was unapologetic about his choice, telling the Kentish Express newspaper the album was the one he listened to most in his youth and it reflected the tastes of his generation.
"Tempting though it might be to say someone like the Kaiser Chiefs is my favourite, I do always tend to go back to the music I grew up with," he said.
Meanwhile, former Conservative leader and Folkestone and Hythe MP Michael Howard chose The Beatles "White Album" as his favourite.
His admiration for the album, recorded in 1968, is reflected in the names of his two cats - Martha and Prudence, named after the two tracks "Dear Prudence" and "Martha My Dear."
