A town centre cafe has closed its doors after just nine months as devastated bosses say the cost-of-living crisis has made it impossible to carry on.
Bank Street Cafe opened in Ashford in March, taking over the unit previously used by Sky Restaurant, which shut after hygiene inspectors found ‘major improvements’ were needed.
The new business quickly became popular with customers but former manager Sinead Stockman says rising bills and an empty town centre have made it too difficult to continue.
“We had to close the business down before occurring too much debt,” she said.
“Unfortunately with high rents, business rates, and in the middle of a cost-of-living crisis, it is very hard on the high street.
“Covid has obviously influenced everyone’s way of living, i.e. ordering online and not so many trips required to the town centre.
“Everything has risen in price. Even wholesalers prices have shot up high. With people not being able to afford food at home, it would appear a trip to a cafe would now be a luxury to any household.
“We are devastated at having to close the doors and would like to thank all our customers who did support our business during the time we were open, and hope they understand the challenges that not only new businesses, but any businesses, have to endure to keep afloat.
“We are seeing so many empty shops on the high street and no matter how many colourful picnic tables are put out or decor is put on empty shops, this will not entice people to shop in the centre.”
In August, Ashford Borough Council installed colourful tables, benches and bunting across Middle Row and at the top end of Bank Street as part of a short-term regeneration project.
It was designed to encourage active and healthy lifestyles by introducing attractive places to meet, and enhancing public spaces.
They received mixed reactions from traders, with some concerned what it would mean for business as they covered several parking spaces.
They were removed at the end of the scheme in October.
Before becoming Sky Restaurant, the Bank Street unit was RJ’s American diner, which had moved from next to Longacres Bybrook Barn in Kennington but closed in 2020.
