Olympic gold medalist Jamie Staff today unveiled a high
speed train named after himself.

The Beijing 2008 cycling champion from
Ashford one of 12 top British athletes to have a series trains
dubbed Britain’s Fastest christened after him.

Mr Staff took part in the ceremony at
Ashford International Station with local dignitaries such as local
MP Damian Green and borough council leader Paul Clokie.

Mr Staff told the KM Group: “I was very
surprised when I heard they had put my name on a train. It is very
exciting.

“Those other athletes are really famous
and are high achievers so to be put among them really is an
honour.”

Mr Staff was selected by a public vote
of more than 1000 to find the 11 fastest Briton to join Dame Kelly
Holmes to have first 12 high speed trains named after them.

Other Olympic champions being honoured
included rower Sir Steve Redgrave, swimmer Duncan Goodhew and
runner Lord Sebastian Coe.

Charles Horton, managing director of
Southeastern, said; “Our high speed trains are the fastest in the
country so it seems only appropriate that we name the first 12
after Britain’s fastest.

“It is great that Jamie has been able
to come her in person and see the train for himself.

“I know that he is committed to the
Ashford area having grown up her, and we are glad that we are now
able to bring him home in just 37 minutes from St Pancras
International.”

The full high speed service begins in
December although there has been a preview service since this
summer.
