Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a “lovely lad” with the “purest soul” who died after a car crashed into a roundabout.

Mati Tabaka from Ashford has been named locally as the 20-year-old victim of the devastating accident at the junction of Bad Munstereifel Road and Jacques Faucheux Avenue.

Emergency crews were called at 12.10am on Sunday after a black VW Golf, which had been travelling west, collided with the Flanders Field roundabout.

Police have confirmed a 20-year-old man – who was a passenger in the car – died at the scene.

Another man, also aged 20, and two 19-year-old men were taken to hospital with serious injuries.

Those who knew Mati, who went to North School, have since taken to social media to share their grief at the news.

One person wrote on Facebook: “I can’t believe this has happened. May you rest in peace Mati Tabaka.”

Another added: “Rest in peace Mati. You truly were one-of-a-kind, a precious soul, love you always.”

Others described him as a “lovely lad” who had the “purest soul”.

Prayers have also been shared for the three young men injured in the crash, who are also believed to be former North School pupils. One person wrote: “Rest easy Mati Tabaka taken too soon. Come on boys you can do this.”

Police say all four men are from the Ashford area.

The air ambulance was also called alongside six fire engines and two height vehicles.

Firefighters used various cutting tools and hydraulic rescue equipment to free the casualties and left just after 5am.
