Ambulance, police and fire crews rushed to Bad Munstereifel Road, in Sevington after a serious crash left one woman seriously injured and another hurt

A major road has now re-opened - seven hours after it was shut following a two-car crash which left a woman driver with serious injuries.

The woman was cut free from her car by firefighters and airlifted to a London hospital following the smash in Bad Munstereifel Road, Ashford this morning.

The road was sealed off while investigators probed what caused the crash - which left one of the cars on its roof.

Another female driver was taken to a local hospital with "less serious injuries."

Emergency crews were first called to the scene between the M20/A20 Hythe Road and Barrey Road in Sevington at 10.40am.

Fire crews used hydraulic rescue equipment and airbags to help release the women working alongside paramedics.

Witness Anne-Marie Butler, 25, from Chatham, had been driving behind the cars when the collision happened.

She said: "One of the drivers seemed fine and was walking around but the other one's injuries seemed more serious."

A police spokesman said: "Kent Police received a report of a collision in Bad Munstereifel Road at 10.40am on Tuesday 28 April.

"It is believed two vehicles were involved in the collision; an orange coloured Mazda 2 saloon car, and a silver coloured Nissan saloon car.

"Both vehicles were travelling from the Junction 10 roundabout, towards South Ashford, approaching the Sevington turn off, when they were in collision.

"The silver Nissan car overturned, and a woman sustained serious injuries. She was taken to a London hospital by air ambulance.

"The driver of the Mazda car was taken to a local hospital with less serious injuries.

"It is believed that a number of people may have witnessed this incident and anyone who hasn’t yet spoken to police, is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 01622 798538, quoting reference number 28-363."

The road is closed from the M20 J10 roundabout and is not expected to reopen until 5pm.
