The demolition of a giant gas holder in Ashford is nearly complete.
A digger tore through the lower section of the redundant structure this week.
Work to demolish the tank, in Gasworks Lane, just off Victoria Way, started in November last year when scaffolding was erected around the massive structure.
The holder, which is owned by Gas distribution network company SGN, was constructed in 1966 and had a 118ft diameter, was 130ft high and had the capacity to hold one million cubic feet of gas.
The demolition work is being carried out by contractors Syd Bishop and Sons Ltd, whose slogan is 'Watch it come down'.
They dismantled the holder from the top down, with removed sections being dropped inside the holder’s shell and then retrieved and taken away via a huge hole that has been created at the structure’s base
This week, the contractors knocked through the lower section.
The Kentish Express will feature a 'demolition special' once the work is complete.
