Kent Fire and Rescue Service frees woman with fingers trapped in holes at the Stour Centre, Tannery Lane, Ashford

When Deb Jarvis arrived for an early exercise class this morning she had no idea she would need rescuing by firefighters just minutes later.

She was in the hall at Ashford's Stour Centre waiting for her Fight Klub class to begin when she lent back on a wall and found herself stuck.

A metal railing that runs around the wall has holes in it, which she had inadvertently pushed three fingers into.

After seeing this story on KentOnline, Deb got in touch to explain how she got into the predicament and thank firefighters for helping her.

The mum-of-one, who is actually 40 despite firefighters guessing she was in her early 30s, said: "I was having a chat before class and I leant back on the panel and got three of my fingers stuck.

"One of them came out with some good old soap but that didn't work with the others so someone called the fire brigade because my fingers were starting to turn a purple/blue colour.

"They turned up with some lubricant but that wasn't successful so they had to cut my fingers out.

"I am a little red faced. I found it funny but I thought it was a bit extreme. I was saying we shouldn't call the fire brigade, it's not an emergency, but the others were saying it was an emergency because my fingers were swelling up and changing colour.

"I would like to say a huge thanks to Red Watch firefighters and the early morning fitness team at the Stour Centre for their help and quick thinking.

"I was so grateful to the firefighters for rescuing me and there were actually some hotties among them!"

Despite having swollen fingers on her right hand - and being right-handed - Deb went off to her job as a painter and decorator after this morning's drama and said she was managing just fine.

Crews arrived at 7.15am and within 45 minutes they had rescued her.

Firefighter Mark King said: "Her fingers were stuck in an aluminium ballast railing on the gym hall wall. It has holes in it and she'd inserted her fingers into them while leaning back on the panel.

"We used hand tools to cut her out and release her fingers. She wasn't injured."

He joked: "She was obviously very grateful we managed to free her without having to cut her fingers off! She was actually really good and found it quite funny.

"Unfortunately for her there was a class full of people in the hall, all giggling away."
