Disabled Ashford man’s anger after bin men repeatedly leave his garden gate open

A disabled man is fed-up with bin men leaving his gate open - as it bangs in the wind and rubbish blows into his garden.

Kevin Johnson, of Tile Kiln Lane in Kennington, Ashford, has even caught refuse workers failing to shut it on CCTV and council bosses are now investigating.

The 51-year-old has suffered two collapsed lungs and a stroke - and his health has suffered to the extent that he struggles to walk to his gate after the weekly waste collections.

He says the issue has been going on for the past year and a half, continuing after he filed an official complaint to Ashford Borough Council (ABC).

Mr Johnson said: “This has been going on for so long, and the council has been carrying out the same line that they’ll do better. Honestly, it’s absolutely ridiculous.

“Every time I’ve phoned, I have mentioned how I cannot understand why your guy cannot close the gate.

“And because I live across the road from the shop, all the rubbish dumped by kids gets funnelled into my garden because they keep leaving my gate open. I can’t keep my front yard looking nice or feel secure.

“I’m sick, and things are really going downhill. I’m in so much pain, and this should be taken more seriously. It’s killing me to go out weekly to do this. I’m at breaking point.”

The former security engineer once tried leaving his bin outside his gate for collection - but then found it was mistakenly dragged to a neighbour's property, meaning he had to walk further to retrieve it.

After one occasion where the gate was left open, a secondary collection was organised by ABC, which Mr Johnson saw as “a gesture of good faith”.

However, after the visit, he noticed that his gate, which has a latch, was again left banging in the wind.

He said: “As a courtesy, they sent a truck around to collect my bin to show me they could close the gate. It felt like a gesture of good faith.

“I looked out the window and saw that the gate was wide open.

“I thought it was some kind of joke, but I checked the CCTV, and there the bin man was. He opened my gate, emptied the bin, returned it, and left it wide open.

“It felt like an insult. This was supposed to be an apology visit but when I phoned the council afterwards, it was like they had no idea who I was.”

His gate is now damaged and hangs off its hinges after being left open during recent stormy weather.

An ABC spokesperson said: “We have received a formal complaint, and we will contact the resident once our investigations are completed.”

In March, Suez became Ashford, Maidstone and Swale’s sole waste provider on a £152 million contract.

There have since been multiple reports of missed bin collections and other issues.

The build-up of rubbish in one area left residents feeling like they were living in a “slum”, while others warned they would stop paying council tax because the services was so poor.

Suez has been contacted for comment.
