Former Ashford boss Gary Alexander has revealed he was advised not to take the role at Homelands.

Speaking on this week’s KM Football Podcast, Alexander said he was warned off going to Ashford on more than one occasion.

Alexander, now at Southern Counties East Glebe, was sacked by text in November 2018 and revealed: “I was told before I took the job to be careful and people were even telling me not to go as I was driving down there. I found out the hard way.

“We’d just won 4-0 and it was our fourth consecutive win. I got a text at 10 o’clock at night sat in bed saying my services were no longer required.

“Ashford is a great club with great fans who I have a lot of respect for. I’ve got good friends there, but I clashed with a certain individual.”

Alexander still looks back fondly on his time at the club, particularly after a number of players he signed were named in their best XI of the past decade.

The 40-year-old joined as assistant to Jason Whitmore in January 2018 with a view to taking over the following season.

He said: “We built a hell of a team between us, but obviously it was cut short through no fault of our own.

“Seven of the players I signed at Ashford made their team of the decade, which gave me great pleasure knowing that I could attract the sort of signings that can influence a club.”
