Mark Collins shrugged off losing a seven-shot lead in the final round to win the Kent Amateur Championship at Sundridge Park.

The 19-year-old, +3 handicapper, from Chart Hills went to lunch with a commanding advantage over Matthew Sheehan from Princes.

The pair were the last to tee-off, after play had been suspended for 40 minutes earlier in the day due to lightning.

Collins stumbled on the outward half of his final round, culminating in a double bogey on the ninth, while Sheehan made birdie.

However, he recovered to produce a strong finish winning the 72-hole two-day event by two shots from Sheehan, and eight clear of third-placed Freddie Price (Royal Blackheath).

Collins led the field of 63 from the start, carding a first round five under par 66, to finish four clear of Wrotham Heath’s Danny Holmes and five ahead of home player Luke Spooner.

The afternoon round proved more difficult for most of the field as the wind increased. Collins shot 73 to end the day three under par, while Holmes (79) and Spooner (77) fell further behind.

Collins’ victory earns him the chance to represent Kent in the Champion of Champions event at Woodhall Spa in Lincolnshire in September.

He also competes in qualifying for next month’s British Open at East Sussex National at Uckfield on Monday week.
