Ashford manager Danny Kedwell has specific requirements as he searches for a new goalkeeper.

Kedwell is in the market for an experienced No.1 to complete the spine of his side.

It’s a tricky position to fill, as the Nuts & Bolts boss acknowledges.

“I want someone who fits the way we’re going to play,” he said.

“It needs to be someone who can play with his feet as well, so it’s a tough one. I’ve got a couple of targets in mind.

“It’s a very important position to get right and I want someone with a bit of experience as well.

“Once we’ve got the goalkeeper, that’s the spine done and then maybe we just need a couple more to strengthen us up.

“I’m talking to a few people but there’s nothing concrete.”

Ashford report back for pre-season training on Saturday, June 29.

The opening sessions will include a number of trialists, with Kedwell receiving numerous requests.

He’s happy to look at players and will soon tell if they’re the right fit for Ashford.

“I’ve had loads of people asking for trials, which is fine because you might find a gem,” said Kedwell.

“The first couple of sessions, we’ll have a few trialists in.

“I can tell straight away whether someone’s right for us.

“The way I play, they have to be able to handle the ball and have legs. If someone can’t handle the ball, they aren’t for me.

“I’ll know that from a passing drill.

“Sometimes you can see a player in there and they aren’t quite ready but they might be in a year or so.

“It depends on the situation.

“If someone’s nowhere near it, I’ll tell him at the first session this isn’t for you, it’s best if you look elsewhere.

“I don’t want to waste anyone’s time. It’s better to be honest.”

It’s no surprise Ashford are an attractive proposition.

They have plenty going for them with an ex-Football League striker in charge and the club going through a takeover.

“All that helps,” said Kedwell. “Players have got to trust me.

“There’s a style I want to play and what I want them to do, and it all has to fit for them.

“The ones I’ve tried to sign, I’ve got them on board, so I must be doing something right. I’ve got the ones I wanted.”

Ashford are also keen to offer the club’s youth-team players a pathway to the first team.

Kedwell’s on board with that and will involve youngsters in pre-season.

He said: “There’ll be a few that come in and play some games so we can have a look.

“There’s always someone - they just need the chance - so you’ve always got to be watching.

“I’ll be giving kids chances - that’s the sort of manager I am.”

Kedwell, meanwhile, has high hopes for Ashford’s most recent summer signing.

Defender Will Moses, who had a loan spell at Homelands last season, has joined from Folkestone.

The deal was announced while Kedwell was on holiday.

“He’s only 22 and he’s got great potential,” said Kedwell.

“He can play in a back three or a back four.

“He’s a good footballer and the sort of player I want.

“I’m pleased to get that one over the line.

“He’s got that experience in the league above.

“I watched him a couple of times last year and really liked him.

“He just needs to play games and he’ll do that with us.”
