Adam Knight says Ashford RFC are determined to end a stressful season strongly.

The 31-7 win over Aylesford Bulls last weekend halted an eight-match losing run in London SE2, but skipper Knight knows there are more difficult days ahead beginning with a trip to Medway this weekend.

Knight said: “It could be the toughest of the lot. We have got to go there and consolidate on the back of last week’s win, looking to get a bonus point.”

Winless and pointless Bulls still proved no pushover, and Knight added: “It was nice to get back to winning ways. It was very hard and the scoreline doesn’t really reflect how the game went. We led 12-7 at half-time after a very even first 40 minutes, and then we slowly ground them down.”

Injuries and player unavailability have affected the club’s displays this season, and Knight, the youngest skipper in the club’s history admitted: “It has been very stressful at times, with results going against us We have also lost five or six players through injury, including Lewis Stimpson who is out for the season with a shoulder injury.”

Knight added: “I will get through this season, and then sit down and think about things. With (coach) Gregor (Dougall) leaving, a lot of things have fallen to me and it has been very difficult trying to balance rugby with work and family.

“Gregor’s departure was very unexpected, but the squad have all kept together, maintaining the same direction we had under him, but adding a bit of our own to it.”
