YOUNG Kent pole vaulter Hannah Olson has set a new national record for the pole vault in the under-15 age group.

Her 3.51 metre vault added to the growing list of achievements for herself and her sister Natalie, a fellow member of Ashford Athletic Club. Her best at the start of the season was 3.10m.

Olson's effort was some compensation for Ashford in the Kent Women's s League match at Deangate, where they finished second to Bromley, who thereby deposed them as first division champions.

Ironically, the pole vault was a non-scoring event, but Ashford also stole the show in the under-17 hammer, where Sarah Dobriskey's throw of 41.26m was a league record.

However, Bromley took the title, their fourth in five years, by 150 points.

Both Olson sisters, who live at Eastling, near Faversham, had previously competed in the pole vault at the AAA junior championships in Sheffield, Natalie clearing 3.50m for the silver medal, and Hannah 3.10 for fourth place.

Natalie had gained first-time clearances at 3.00m, 3.20m, and 3.40m, but her one failure at 3.50m cost her the gold medal on countback as Erin Kinnear, of Lagan Valley, cleared first time to set an Irish record. Kinner had four failures at previous heights.
