Ashford Hockey Club men’s 1st team moved out of the South Premier League Division 2 relegation zone for the first time in months with a hard-fought 3-1 victory at highly-placed Winchester.
Winchester’s threat at penalty corners was obvious but Ashford’s homework paid off as Keir Starley dealt with the drag flicker with ease, and the defensive unit cleaned up the rebounds with confidence.
At the other end, Paul Cheap’s drag flick at a short corner gave Ashford the lead.
Soon after, a fine move down the right ended with man-of-the-match Rob Playford crossing for Sam Handley to turn home at the back post.
The second half was tough going as both sides struggled to find their fluent best on a bouncy pitch.
Winchester finally pulled a goal back from a rebound, and Ashford were now facing a nervy finish.
Winchester, however, lost their heads and had two players sin binned.
Ashford capitalised and from a short corner the first shot was half saved but Dan Wells looped the ball over the keeper’s head into the roof of the net for Ashford’s third.
Ashford can take another huge step towards avoiding relegation on Saturday when they entertain Richmond, who are next to bottom.
