Lloyd Blackman says the visit of Phoenix Sports this weekend offers Ashford United the perfect chance to bounce back following a first Southern Counties East League defeat at leaders Erith & Belvedere.
The Barnehurst-based club, United’s old Kent Invicta League rivals, now boast the only remaining unbeaten record, following seven wins and three draws, having played only 10 league games. They are also through to the first round proper of the FA Vase.
Ashford player/assistant manager Blackman said of Saturday’s match: “It’s another big game for us. It comes at a good time and we will be up for it.
“We will be looking forward to another good training session tonight (Thursday), will prepare well and look to redouble our efforts.”
Blackman and boss Paul Chambers have explained the absence of strikers Andy Irvine and Keelan Mooney
Irvine, who got off the mark in the 2-2 draw at Sevenoaks last month, following early season hamstring injuries, is taking a break from football due to work commitments, while Mooney is working on his match fitness playing for Invicta League side Sheppey United.
Blackman said: “Andy has started a new job recently, so has taken a step back and we have lost him for a little while.
“At this level, work is important because football is never going to put food on the table.”
Of Mooney, Chambers said: “Keelan is getting games at Sheppey.
“Once he is ready, he will be back with us. He has got a great attitude and still a big part of our plans.”
Loan signing Connor Coyne, who has joined from Folkestone, is set for his home debut against Phoenix.
