Kennington manager Dan Scorer seeing improvement after brutal assessment of early-season form

A few home truths and a change of style have helped Kennington move out of the relegation zone.

Ton climbed off the foot of the Southern Counties East Premier Division and up to 17th after a 2-1 home win over Larkfield & New Hythe on Saturday.

That followed an encouraging 1-1 draw against Holmesdale.

“The last couple of weeks have been a lot more pleasing,” said manager Dan Scorer.

“Obviously results have been better, which certainly helps.

“We’ve had to take a really honest approach with the boys.

“We’ve stripped it back quite significantly and given them a bit of a brutal assessment of where we are and why we think we are where we are.

“At the end of the day, we find ourselves in a similar position to where we were last year and that’s not something we wanted, we wanted to have a much more productive season and set much higher targets for ourselves.

“We don’t see ourselves being a million miles away but unfortunately we haven’t been able to show any real consistency.

“Now it’s just about continuing to put points on the board.

“We’ve had to sort of change up our style a little bit and it is a shame because we’ve come into the season with a shape that we know works so well and a style of play that works well, it’s good to watch and the boys love playing the way we were asking them to play.

“But unfortunately three, four, five good wins, with cup games, is not enough to warrant us continuing to play that way.

“That aside, it’s a matter of wanting to put in that extra 10%, putting in a little bit more effort and showing a little bit of character, which is what we’ve lacked unfortunately.

“But the boys seem to have taken on board what we said to them in the last two or three weeks and hopefully we’re starting to show signs that we’re going to be a lot better off than we were last year.”

Kennington visit third-placed Fisher this Saturday (3pm).
