HIGHLY-rated motorcycle racer Leon Camier admits he can hardly wait to get started after it was revealed he would be joining the Wrigley’s Airwaves Ducati team for the 2008 British Superbike campaign.
Camier finished eighth riding for Honda this summer, his debut season and now teams up with former Superbikes champion Shakey Byrne, who was fifth last time out.
The 21-year-old, from Bethersden, is very much regarded as one of the sport’s rising stars having won both the British 125GP and Supersport Championships before stepping up to the Superbike class in 2007.
He finished the season in eighth but his campaign was curtailed in August by a nasty crash at Cadwell Park, which saw him undergo three hours of surgery for a serious leg injury.
Camier is now on the road to recovery and is confident he will be fit for the New Year and is keen to get on the new bike as soon as possible.
He explained: "It’s all a whole new challenge for me as everything will be new, the team, the bike and, as yet, I haven’t ridden the Superbike at Donington or Brands Indy due to my injury this season."
Far from dwelling too much on his injury Camier believes the experience will actually make him a better rider and he is setting his sights high.
He said: "My goal is to win but obviously there are so many factors so I will take it one step at a time.
"First I need to get fully fit with my leg, then I need to learn everything around me and start moving things forward
"I’d like to be in a strong position at the start of the season."
