Dan Scorer is turning his attention to Kennington’s next FA Vase opponents after making history in his 200th match at the helm.
Goals in the last 10 minutes from Tom Scorer and Gary Lockyer earned a 2-0 win at Glebe on Saturday as Ton reached round three for the first time.
With Southern Counties East matches suspended, their next game will be a third-round home tie against Sutton Common Rovers on December 19.
Like Glebe and Fisher, who Ton beat in the previous round, Rovers play a level above Scorer’s side and are top of the Combined Counties Premier Division.
It’s set to be their biggest challenge yet but confidence is high after a 10th straight win in all competitions at the weekend.
“It’s a massive test, a really tough draw,” said boss Scorer. “They’re in Step 5, they’re top of their division and they’re unbeaten as well.
“They’ve also played 11 league games, where we’ve only played six. If we were still unbeaten after 11 league games, I’d be very happy.
“It looks like they have good connections with Sutton United (National League club).
“A few of the boys have been doing their homework and noticed a few youth players from Sutton United in their ranks who have also had game time with the first team.
“They will be a seriously strong outfit but we have home advantage and we play our pitch well. We’ll see on the day but all we can do is prepare as much as we can.”
Kennington players had looked after themselves during lockdown and their fitness told with the late goals that saw off Glebe.
Scorer said: “We had a shaky 15 minutes when we came out for the second half and we had to soak up pressure and plug the gaps to make sure they weren’t able to play between the lines.
“After that we looked a constant threat and a goal looked like it was coming from the 70th minute.
“We kept working at it and eventually took our chance and I felt we’d score another because our tails were up and we looked the stronger side.
“They say a team are vulnerable when they score but for us this season it’s been very much the opposite.
“That’s down to the mentality of the players and, as I’ve said previously, we’ve done a lot of work of the mental side of the game to get the best out of the players.”
It was the perfect way for Scorer to celebrate his 200th game as Ton boss, in what’s proving to be a very good season.
He said: “It was an extremely enjoyable day. I wasn’t expecting everything to be perfect given the time we’d had off but everyone did their job and their work rate was phenomenal.
“That’s seven clean sheets in 11 games, seven of those in the last nine, and we’ve won our last 10 as well. I’ve lost count of the number of teams we’ve beaten from the division above.
“It sends out a big message to the teams in our league and the league above. In our camp, we’ve now come to the stage where there’s an expectancy because we know we can do it.”
