Brewmaster High Halden have won the DFDS Kent Sunday Junior Trophy for the first time.
The Ashford-based side beat Dartford opponents Sutton Dynamo thanks to George Large’s first-half goal at the Gallagher Stadium on Sunday.
One goal proved enough with Brewmaster producing a defensive masterclass to keep Dynamo at bay.
Led by outstanding captain and man-of-the-match Morgan Todd, Brew kept Sutton exactly where they wanted them.
Sutton had plenty of possession in front of the backline but getting in behind them proved difficult.
As a result, they were reduced to shots from distance which were either off-target or comfortably saved by vocal keeper Woo Chapman.
Brewmaster are enjoying a season to remember, with two trophies already in the bag.
They have one more final to come and are on the verge of winning the league but Kent Junior Trophy success is the crowning glory.
Manager Justin Light, who’s brought the team through from under-16s to men’s football, said: “I’m so chuffed for the boys - I’m lost for words, really.
“It’s been a long old season and it’s not finished yet but today is the pinnacle for these boys playing in a Kent Cup Final.
“I’m pretty emotional because when I played I won four trophies and now as a manager there’s potential to do the same.
“We’ve got another cup final next week and we need one more game to win the league. What a season.
“It’s funny because I didn’t think I was going to get a team together this season to tell you the truth.
“We came near the bottom of the league last season and people get despondent but the boys badgered me to keep doing it.
“My son Nathan plays and all his mates wanted to play and we’ve got this team now.
“They’re a bunch of superstars.
“I thought Morgan Todd, our captain, was unbelievable at the back. He won everything and did everything I asked him to do.”
A rare defensive blip came in the opening minute when Kian Day pinched the ball off Sam Sharp just outside the box and squared for Reece Jones but the chance fizzled out.
Ben Taylor, whose long throws kept the Brew defenders on their toes, threatened with a header, while Oliver Carter was lively outside the box for a Sutton side who were quick to win the ball back in a bright start.
But Brewmaster grew into the game with manager’s son Nathan Light pulling the strings with his classy left foot and Cameron Clarke showing plenty of energy in the middle of the park.
Light impressed on the ball and put good deliveries into the Sutton box, while also working keeper Thomas Adamson from a 20-yard drive.
There was an opening for Sutton when a lovely pass from Carter picked out Thomas Tierney in space but Chapman stuck out a leg.
The winner came in the 35th minute with Large breaking into the box, between a couple of defenders, and rifling the ball past Adamson.
Day’s air-shot, when in space, was perhaps Sutton’s best chance to level before half-time.
Another decent hit from Light, the ball sitting up nicely to strike, forced Adamson into action in the second half.
Goalscorer Large fired wide from a difficult angle while Joe Rabbett couldn’t take advantage of a mistake in the Sutton defence as Brewmaster had chances to add a second.
Sutton pushed hard but couldn’t find the clear-cut opening they needed to force extra-time.
Brewmaster might have had a second in added time when Light released Jesse Excell but Adamson saved.
