ASHFORD Town FC have brought in former Tottenham and England defender Terry Fenwick in a bid to halt their spiralling fortunes.
The arrival of the 44-year-old as coach means that Tony Reynolds’ spell as caretaker boss is over after just three matches, Durham-born Fenwick is a long-term friend of Town owner Tim Thorogood, who believes his experience will give Town a lift, at what he concedes is a difficult time for the struggling Ryman League outfit.
Thorogood explained: “Basically Terry’s coming here to help me because he’s a personal friend. I’ve known him well for 10 years and I don’t think this club will have had a better coach.
“At the moment he does not want to make any firm commitments but I would imagine he will probably be here for at least a month and then we’ll take it from there.”
Thorogood said he hoped Reynolds would stay on at Homelands but the former caretaker boss has already ruled out working alongside Fenwick.
Reynolds, whose three games in charge all ended in defeat, explained: “It’s a shame that my stint has come to an end so quickly but I made it clear when I took the job that I wasn’t in a position to do it full time.
“I was only ever going to be a stop-gap but I’d like to think that given a bit more time I would have made a difference.
“Because of my work and family commitments I don’t think I would be able to give the assistant’s job the time it needs but if the club felt I could help out in other capacity I’d be happy to because I love the place.”
During a 17-year playing career Fenwick clocked up more than 250 games for QPR as well as turning out for Spurs and Crystal Palace and he also won 20 England caps.
