Former City high-flier John Dowsett is the new chairman of Hythe Town.

The Reachfields club confirmed his appointment on Monday, together with that of another new addition to the board, commercial manager Peter Cuffe.

Mr Dowsett was executive director of Goldman Sachs between 1984-1990, before serving as chairman and deputy chairman with the International Securites Market Association, which regulate the world’s bond markets.

His work with the Bank of England, Stock Exchange and European Central Bank also saw him work closely with the likes of Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, Chancellor of the Exchequer Kenneth Clarke, and United States President George Bush.

Football though has always been close to his heart since the age of five - playing the game as an amateur, then a West Ham season-ticket holder for 30 years, becoming a regular Hythe supporter three seasons ago.

He and Mr Cuffe both believe their election top the board offer them the chance to continue the good work of former chairman Paul Markland who stood down after 12 years.

Mr Dowsett said: "My first meeting with the club left me totally confident and relaxed about coming to the club, and dovetails nicely with what has gone before.

Mr Cuffe has returned to the area after working in grassroots football in the North.

He said: "I am looking forward to working at Hythe who are a fantastic club. I also want our sponsors to become more involved."
