Darren Marsden has pledged his future to Ashford United ahead of what he believes will be an important spell in the Southern Counties East League club’s season.
The 27-year-old experienced midfielder, released by Faversham last month, made his debut in the 4-3 win over Rochester United, and now says he is committed to staying at Homelands.
He said: “I know a few of the lads including Pat Kingwell Lee Winfield and a few others, have settled in well and enjoying my football.
“I had a few Ryman clubs interested in me when I left Faversham, including Jim Ward at Whitstable. I went down there and played one game but the style of play didn’t suit me.
“Paul (Chambers) always tries to play the right way and I want to stay here for as long as possible. They are a good bunch of lads and it’s a nice club.”
Chambers said: “Darren has come in and been superb. He is still recovering from the (abdominal) injury he had at Faversham and is not fully fit but the lad is different class, a great addition to the side and the sort of player we want here.”
Looking ahead, Marsden added: “We are in the fourth round of the FA Vase and 10 points off top-spot in the league, so have a bit of ground to make-up but we are more than capable of doing that, especially if we put a good run together.”
United picked up £1500 following their 2-1 win against Littlehampton on Tuesday night, and now face Eastern Counties League leaders Norwich United next month.
Meanwhile another experienced player Danny Lye has returned to Homelands, and featured in midweek.
United are without a league game this weekend.
