Two goals in the last eight minutes fired Kennington into the third round of the FA Vase on Saturday.
Tom Scorer and Gary Lockyer scored the goals as Southern Counties East Division 1 Kennington deservedly knocked out Premier Division Glebe.
The visitors dominated the first half – but failed to score – before Glebe improved after the break and hit the woodwork.
But, with penalties looming, Kennington stepped up a gear in the final 10 minutes to mark manager Dan Scorer’s 200th game in charge with a victory.
It was all Kennington early on with Callum Peck rounding keeper Billy Johnson but finding the side netting from an acute angle in the eighth minute.
Craig Calvert then played in Lockyer but his shot was blocked by Emmanuel Dasho, Robbie Dolan fired over from distance and Johnson had to push Peck’s effort behind for a corner.
Glebe’s best chance at the other end saw Charlie MacDonald fail to find the target when well placed inside the area.
Kennington went close just after the half-hour, Scorer’s shot was pushed away by the keeper before he turned away Lockyer’s follow-up effort from a tight angle.
Glebe had another good opening just before the break but Kennington keeper Joe Mant did well to save with his legs to deny Jamie Philpot.
Glebe, who were without boss Gary Alexander after he tested positive for Covid, improved at the start of the second half. Skipper Tom Hever went close with a shot that was deflected behind before Mant made a fine one-handed save to turn away Eric De Melo’s shot.
MacDonald then set up Philpot in the 57th minute but his low drive came back off the inside of the upright before MacDonald himself was denied by a combination of good goalkeeping and fine defending.
Kennington had a corner cleared off the line with 20 minutes left but the game appeared to be heading for penalties.
The visitors had other ideas, however, finding the breakthrough in the 82nd minute. Lockyer’s initial shot was kept out but Scorer was on hand to tuck away the loose ball.
Kennington added a second in the final minute, Lockyer’s low shot going through Johnson and booking his side’s place in the next round.
