There’s a significant milestone for Kennington manager Dan Scorer this Saturday.
The Southern Counties East Premier Division club’s FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round trip to division rivals Glebe will be long-serving Ton boss Scorer’s 300th game in charge.
He has seen plenty of changes since he first joined when they were in the second tier of the Kent County League.
“It’s something I’m immensely proud of,” said Scorer, who had to give up playing due to an injury.
“Also, it’s my 10th season at the club. I’m not sure what’s the bigger milestone.
“When I started in Kent County League Division 1, we only had 10 teams in our division. Then, last season, we played 54 games.
“If I had a couple of seasons at this level prior to what I’ve had, I could be close to 500 games!
“It’s been a good journey and long may it continue.”
There is something of a bizarre symmetry between his 200th and 300th matches in charge.
Scorer explained: “It was actually against Glebe that I managed my 200th game [a 2-0 victory in December 2020] in the FA Vase.
“With the FA Cup and FA Vase, we always have liked to play sides we’ve never played before - potentially with a good away day.
“But currently in the South East of England, SCEFL is one of the stronger leagues at Step Five.”
Ton were, in fact, drawn at home with the victors of the tie earning £1,125. But with summer work still going on at Homelands, where they groundshare with Ashford, the fixture has been reversed.
Young striker Fin Dent, playing for them as part of a dual-registration agreement with Isthmian Premier Folkestone, netted the first goal of the opening day of the Southern Counties East Premier Division campaign against Corinthian on Saturday.
But it proved a consolation as Kennington lost 5-1.
On Dent’s goal, Scorer said: “It was a shame that it was a consolation.
“I had someone watch Corinthian prior to our opening game and we looked at where they could be vulnerable. We exploited that almost immediately, which is where the goal came from!
“Fin did a bit of pre-season with us and a bit with Folkestone, and he has been very impressive for both clubs.
“Hopefully, that’s just the start.”
Scorer, still only 32, has had plenty of higher-division offers to leave Kennington.
He doesn’t plan to go anywhere soon, though.
He explained: “I’ve had offers from other clubs but, all the time I feel the club is showing ambition and has the opportunity to progress, I’m happy to stay.
“I’m certainly looking forward to being in charge for a lot longer.”
Ton have been drawn away to Greenways in the First Round of the Kent Senior Trophy on Saturday, October 14.
