ASHFORD Town staged a stunning fightback to overcome a two goal deficit at St Leonards on Monday night.
It was a deserved win on the balance of play but they made it hard for themselves by conceding two goals in the first half hour.
They were stunned at conceding the first goal in 31 seconds. The defence were caught cold as Mark Lovell headed the Hastings side in front in their first attack.
But the Town showed their steel and two attempts figuring Adrian Stone so nearly succeeded.
Then, on 31 minutes, Saints were awarded a corner for a ball that was clearly a throw- in and stalwart Terry White used the gusty wind to curl a shot in direct from the corner kick.
Ashford got back into the match before half-time with a superb first time shot from 25 yards by Stuart White.
Town introduced the still recovering Matt Bower and Simon Elliott at half time for Sam Saunders and Ian Ross and both made an impact.
White went close to emulating namesake Terry White's corner effort but Town got back on terms after 63 minutes. White's free kick was tucked away by Bower with a glancing header and to their credit Town then pressed well for a winner with White, Elliott and Ian Gibbs all going close.
McRobert had struggled with his touch on a heavy surface following the heavy rain on the day and could have had a hat-trick. But he was Town's ultimate hero, hitting the winner two minutes from the end.
* Ashford's players are hosting a testimonial golf day at The Ridge, East Sutton, on September 20 to raise money for teammate Paul Hobbs who has been forced to give up the game through injury. A few places for the breakfast and 18 holes are available for £30, call Simon Elliott on 07887 810835.
