Tommy Warrilow understands the frustration among Ashford fans after a disappointing week.
The Nuts & Bolts were edged 1-0 at Chatham on Saturday in a top-of-the-table Isthmian South East clash.
And they needed an 89th-minute equaliser from Omarr Lawson to rescue a 2-2 draw at home to Beckenham on Tuesday night after the visitors hit back from a goal down.
Ashford are still well-placed - fourth in the table, four points behind leaders Ramsgate - but there’s a sense the team still haven’t clicked following the enforced squad overhaul.
“I hear what people are saying and I can’t disagree,” said boss Warrilow, whose side led Beckenham through Omari Hibbert’s first-half penalty.
“The last two games have been disappointing - we haven’t played well - and I take responsibility.
“We’ve shown character and resilience to keep going on Tuesday at 2-1 down and get a draw but I’m not going to sit here and pretend everything’s right.
“I’ve said that all along. We’ve had to make a lot of changes and my job as a manager is to bring players in and make them work.
“I’d rather it not be right and we’re fourth from top than not be right and be third from bottom, but we’ve not had any consistency in our game.
“The fluency isn’t going to be there when you’ve had a complete rebuild but I still expect better than what we’ve been doing.
“What I won’t do, though, is go into panic mode. I refuse to do that.
“I’m not stupid. I’ve been doing this a long time, I know things haven’t been right, and that’s down to me. This is where we need everyone behind us.
“I’m talking like we’re third-bottom but I do understand the frustration.
“I was fuming after the game on Tuesday night because I know there’s better in the changing room but you have to stay level-headed and get the boys’ confidence up.
“Even if we were top of the table I wouldn’t be happy with the way we’re playing.
“It felt like a loss on Tuesday. I said to the players, ‘Lads, you know you’re all miles better than what you showed’.
“I’m never going to throw players under the bus - I’ll always take responsibility - but we can do so much more.
“On the plus side, we’re a third of the way through the season and we’re fourth in the table.
“The most important thing, and I’ve always said this, is to be in and around it going into the new year, and that’s when you want to get a gallop on.”
Ashford are set to welcome back key midfielder Henry Muggeridge from a broken foot when they meet struggling Haywards Heath at Homelands this Saturday (3pm).
“We need him on the pitch,” said Warrilow. “He’s been doing the warm-ups, so he should be fine for Saturday.
“He’s a big player for us and he brings that noise and energy that we need.”
