The 30-year-old, who works for Ashford Environmental Services and asked not to be named, was pulling into the BP station as he made his way home.

The black BMW crashed into the back of his work's van, leaving him dazed and with minor whiplash.

But he climbed out and went to see if he could help.

He said: "The driver and passenger were getting out of the BMW and I just assisted them as they got down. To be honest, my first thought was to go and help them."

Paramedics were called at around 6.20pm last night to reports of a road traffic collision involving two vehicles on the Swanley Bypass.

"To be honest, my first thought was to go and help them."

They treated a man at the scene before transferring him to a major trauma centre as a priority.

An incident response officer and two ambulance crews attended.

Justin Scrutton, who runs chauffeur company Justin Time Travel in Dartford, said one of his drivers came across the crash scene at around 9pm.

He said: "All he did was pull off there and the petrol station was closed. There is definitely an issue with that junction."

Mr Scrutton told that a similar issue had happened at the same location a couple of years ago.

The police have been contacted for more information.
