Penge shooting: Victim named as murder detectives appeal for witnesses

The victim of a fatal shooting in Penge, near Bromley, has been named - as police reveal he was shot in the back of the head as he left a park.

Police were called by ambulance crews at around 2:20am on Sunday, July 12, to a man collapsed in Croydon Road near the junction with Tremaine Road.

Officers attended the location where a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Formal identification has not yet taken place but police are confident the deceased is Dean Edwards, 43, who lived in South Norwood.

A post mortem examination is due to take place on Thursday, July 16 and next of kin have been informed.

Detectives are appealing for information from anyone that lives near the Betts Park area or the surrounding area who heard anything in the early hours of Sunday July 12 – particularly between 12.15am and 1am.

At this stage, Dean is thought to have been walking through Betts Park and was about to leave via the Croydon Road exit near Tremaine Road junction, when he was shot in the back of his head.

A fast-paced investigation is ongoing to establish what happened, but there have been no arrests.

Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran, said: “We are in the early stages of investigating the murder and are working hard to piece together what happened on the night that lead to Dean losing his life in such a horrific incident.

“We believe Dean was walking through Betts Park and, just as he was about to leave via the Croydon Road exit near Tremaine Road junction as he was shot in his head from behind.

“We are keen to speak to anyone who was in or around Betts Park in Penge on the late evening of Saturday 11 or early into Sunday 12. We are particularly interested in anyone that might have seen or heard anything suspicious between 12.15am and 1am on Sunday, or any time before or after this.

“Anyone who lives in the area, or who was there at that time, may well have information that could assist us tremendously. No matter how insignificant it may seem, we urge you to please get in touch.”

Anyone with information regarding the incident is asked to contact the homicide detectives via the incident room on 0208 721 4868, or via 101 quoting CAD 1402/12JUL.

Alternatively, you can provide information anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
