A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said four crews tackled the blaze at a residential block at an extra care facility - a type of housing that caters for over 55s who are supported to live independently.

A flat on the second floor of the four-storey building was partially damaged.

The spokesman added: “The brigade's 999 control officers took around five calls to this incident, with the first call received at 7.54pm.

“Control officers mobilised crews from Bromley, Beckenham and Orpington fire stations to the scene.

“One adult man was led to safety via an internal staircase before being taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
