Emergency services were called to a park in Bexleyheath following reports a person had got trapped in a pond only to make a strange discovery.
Police and rescue crews arrived at the scene in Danson Park shortly after 1pm but were unable to locate anybody.
A sizeable presence of emergency service vehicles was reported on social media.
Officers were supported in their search efforts by the London Ambulance Service and the Fire Brigade.
But it was later determined a "false alarm" after crews discovered a pair of shoes floating in the pond.
Joshua Coupe, a spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: "We were called at approximately 1.09pm to reports of a person trapped in a pond at Danson Park in Bexleyheath.
"Officers attended along with London Ambulance Service and the London Fire Brigade and found a pair of shoes floating in the water.
"A thorough search was carried out and it was established that nobody was in the pond."
