AFC Wilgar completed a league and cup double after winning the DFDS Kent Sunday Junior Trophy Final at Maidstone’s Gallagher Stadium on Sunday.

A brace from centre-back Billy Armstrong proved decisive although Wilgar could have won by a greater margin but for a combination of good goalkeeping and wasteful finishing.

“I’ve never been that nervous for a long time,” said AFC Wilgar manager Conor Haldane, who spent the second half pacing up and down his technical area.

“In the first half I said to them to keep their heads as they were frustrated that we were not 3-0 up.

“The amount of chances we had in the first half were only going to happen again in the second half, and it did.

“I’m not moaning but I think it could have been a lot more.

“Fair play to The Warren as we played then in a double header in the league recently and they were missing their striker and goalkeeper, and they made a difference to them.

“The goalkeeper made a few good saves, especially in the second half.

“We won the league last week so it’s a league and cup double. I’m so proud of them and what they’ve done this season, it’s thoroughly deserved.”

The Warren’s Joe Clarkson had an early shot cleared off the line and then saw his header from the resulting corner comfortably saved.

But that was as good as it got in attacking terms during the first half as Wilgar took charge.

The impressive Clarkson did brilliantly to deny Corey Spencer a tap-in after Archie Johnson advanced to the byline for Wilgar on 13 minutes.

But the resulting Johnson corner was turned in at the near post by Armstrong for the opener.

Johnson’s shot was then beaten away by keeper Jamie Rapley before Johnson shot wide after getting beyond the full-back.

The lead was nearly doubled just before the break but Spencer crossed for Charlie Field, whose effort was cleared off the line.

Jay Oborne played a one-two with Field before being denied by the legs of Rapley early in the second half.

But gradually The Warren got back into the contest, with Lewis Crouch and Danny Laws starting to get a grip in midfield. However, too many times the final ball let them down as Wilgar’s defensive duo of Armstrong and player-of-the-match Jordan Chidley held firm.

The chances continued to flow at the other end, though, as Oborne shot wide from 20 yards.

The tie was finally settled with three minutes left. Armstrong’s header was tipped over by Rapley but the resulting corner saw Armstrong meet the ball again and the ball squirmed in at the near post.

Warren nearly claimed a late consolation but Callum McCarthy hooked narrowly over from the edge of the penalty area.
