Mike Conway and the no.7 Gazoo Racing Toyota GR010 Hybrid team win at Le Mans 24 hours

Mike Conway finally clinched a Le Mans 24 hours victory at the weekend and admitted to “crying like a little girl” following his team’s success.

The Bromley-born racer, who went to school in Sevenoaks, shared the no.7 Gazoo Racing Toyota GR010 Hybrid with Kamui Kobayashi and José María Lopéz as they claimed victory in the historic race.

Conway, 38, had come close to winning the race before, with three second place finishes. He teamed up with Japan’s Kobayashi and Argentina’s López in what what was a debut for the new Le Mans Hypercar class, winning infront of 50,000 fans at the Circuit de la Sarthe.

Conway, Kobayashi and López started from pole and dominated the race, putting previous disappointments behind them to win. They completed 371 laps, two laps up on the sister Toyota of Sébastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima and Brendon Hartley in the No 8 car which had won the previous three races.

“I was crying like a little girl,” said Conway after the win.

Conway added: "The race was far from easy but I’m so thankful for my team, the team in Cologne and Japan for all of their hard work that made this possible. A huge thank you also to everyone for their support and kind messages!"
