Matthew Robertson is hoping to push his case for a spot at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics this week.

Robertson is part of the 23-strong British Cycling squad which will take part in the UCI Para-cycling Track World Championships in Canada from Thursday.

A member of Bexley-based Woolwich Cycling Club, Robertson has relocated in the past year to Manchester where he can use first-class facilities, including the HSBC UK National Cycling Centre in Sportcity.

"This is the final track event and essentially you know whether you are going (to Tokyo) depending on if you medal or not," said Robertson.

"The decision isn't made until May but if you do well in Canada then you've put one foot in the door."

Robertson has been pleased with his progress in the last 12 months.

"It's been looking good," said Robertson. "If I take some of the times I've been doing into competitions then I'm looking strong to get a medal.

"But, of course, you never know what improvements other athletes have made so the rest of the world might be a lot quicker now as well."

Robertson will take part in the 3k individual pursuit and a 1k time trial.

"A lot of it is down to hard work," he added, when explaining his improved performance in recent months.

"I've been working on different things so it all seems to be working for me.

"I've been doing a lot of sharp sessions to help the less able parts of my body.

"On the track that has meant I've been maintaining the ability to push hard, so it's about getting all the small parts right."
