Bodyshots Boxing Gym youngster Tommy Dighton proved a big hit with victory in the England Schoolboy finals in Newcastle.

It was Dighton's second success in recent weeks after he was part of the five-man line-up that registered a clean sweep of wins in the London Schoolboy finals.

He joins fabled company, too, following in the footsteps of local pro champ Archie Sharp, who also won the England Schoolboy title for Crayford-based Bodyshots.

Dighton was up against New Saints' Johnny Doe in the under-50kg final and with the fighters evenly matched most observers predicted a close contest. However the bout was one-sided from the off.

The early rounds went Dighton's way with his ferocious power and speed to the fore. He won the battles of movement and precision, too.

However the later rounds were nip and tuck as Doe came forward to try and gain the advantage. But Dighton's speed, combined with his walk-forward approach, saw the judges declare him the Golden Gloves winner, making all his hard work in the gym worthwhile.

"I'm absolutely delighted to have got the victory that I deserved," he said. "I have worked hard for this, and I don't believe the verdict was ever in doubt.

"Having lost a final a few years back there was huge motivation in me to go one better this year. Also, due to my brother not getting the decision he deserved in his semi-final bout meant I was doing this for him as well."

Trainer Obi Coates added: "Tommy has worked incredibly hard to get where he has today, and his performance in the final showed that the training, the extra sessions and the detail of the plan we give all our fighters at Bodyshots, we believe gives them a chance against anyone else.

"All our fighters deserve huge credit for their discipline and dedication they show week after week."

Next up for Tommy will be progression to the Three Nations Tournament contested by fighters from England, Scotland and Wales.
